WhatsApp was founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, two former Yahoo employees from 2007, in the city of New York. Before Message Mate came to a halt, Acton and Koum utilized a considerable portion of their severance pay from Yahoo to incorporate their new venture and complete the development stage of WhatsApp. By the time the first version of WhatsApp went live in 2009, it could be used as a platform for group chats.
